English in the Workplace

Working professionals today are being expected to excel in spoken and written English. When dealing with clients and top management as well as preparing business documents, English is the official language of business. Being equipped with the right amount of knowledge and skills when it comes to English communication helps in shaping and enhancing one’s career here and abroad.

An employee who wants to improve his English for a more promising job opportunity or promotion or an employer who wants his team to communicate better in English can follow these three steps:

  1. Ask native English speaking colleagues to do personal or small group coaching. They can also post on the bulletin board a “Word/Quote of the Day” with its meaning/synonyms and antonyms in English or translation in the vernacular.
  2. Employees should be familiar with English terminologies related to the industry, the company and their duties and responsibilities, and they can use the Internet to research on detailed explanations per term.
  3. Invest in English grammar lessons or do a self-study a few hours per week using the right materials.

English skills in oral and written is very important in the workplace. Communication is very important not only for smooth running of a business enterprise but it is also equally, if not more, important for the success and growth of individual executives and professionals. In the age of globalization, communication is of paramount importance. The lack of proper communication skills creates barriers and distortion leading to miscommunication and breakdown in meaning which can have some very negative repercussions for any company or business set-up. The three steps mentioned above will be of great help for us.

These 3 steps are really helpful in improving your English Skills especially in your workplace. In my opinion, when it comes to Filipino who’s English is their second language, most Filipinos are not really interested in learning English, most Filipinos are reacting when someone is speaking English and some were saying ‘nosebleed’ these are the reasons why some were so shy of practicing English and some were always afraid that they can’t learn how to speak the language. A Filipino to learn speaking English should not be afraid nor be shy to speak this language, for him to be confident and be fluent enough in speaking the languange grammatically and conceptually correct.

It is true that English is the official language most especially in business. And it is a great help for us to know how to use correct English communication in dealing with our phone call conversation, documentation and preparing minutes of the meeting. Like in my case, I am always encountering terminologies that I don’t understand, I am not ashamed in asking somebody to correct me if I am wrong because I know they will help me to do things right.

Excellence in speaking and writing English is very important for working professionals especially nowadays. It is a competitive edge if one can speak and write English well. The three (3) steps listed above are very helpful in improving one’s English. I used to be the editor-in-chief of our school paper back in high school. During school newspaper writing competition, I am always surprised upon winning the 1st place in English category and ranked only 2nd in Filipino category. It seemed to me that writing in Filipino is more difficult than writing in English. My knowledge and skills in writing also had help me a lot with my previous job in semiconductor industries where I worked as a Purchasing Specialist and most of my suppliers are foreigners. With my current job here in LGU Sto. Tomas, I am still able to use my humble and few knowledge in English. Thanks to American English, with their training, I can still improve on my speaking and writing skills in English.

I think speaking English in the workplace, in one’s home and with the “barkada” is pretty cool. But English is good only for businesses in the business districts of the country where they deal mostly with each other.
In the provinces especially in government offices, Tagalog is usually used to ensure understandability and also not to allienate the people who come for the services of the national or local government.
In the central business district, English is definitely an advantage because it is the language most spoken by management, by most clients, the language of written communication and all the literature related to business.
The best way, I believe, in upgrading one’s English proficiency is to read more English books, newspapers and magazines and watch English movies.

Actually, using English as a medium of communication in the Workplace does not necessary be at all time. Yes, it is very important that you know how to speak English properly but we should also use it at proper time and place. If the work place requires you to speak English, why not. But make sure that we deliver the information to the recipient correctly. But if the workplace requires a casual conversation, we can use our own Filipino language on which we can express ourselves more.

Speaking and writing in English should be exercised in the workplace. We tend to be reluctant speaking in English when talking to fellow Filipinos. Often times, when foreign clients suddenly approach us, we stutter and mumble incomprehensible statements. We should be comfortable in speaking and writing English casually. This will boost our confidence and allow us to express ourselves to a wider audience. We should also encourage our co-workers to speak English.

One’s native language is important for communication with colleagues in the office, however, English is a worldwide recognized language and using it in the workplace can increase the competency of its employees. If employees communicate in English, it can be an indirect training for them when they deal with clients or customers who are either foreigners or locals

It is a given that not all people are very good in speaking or writing in english. However, it can be understood no matter if it’s being spoken correctly or incorrectly because the brain does not process word by word but in totality. Even though the english language is widely accepted in the workplace, some people do inhibit its use by teasing or bullying and is a bad idea in a way to hone skills. Add to the three steps in improving one’s english, it is also good to invest in books. Not only does it widen one’s vocabulary but it also encourages the reader’s imagination.

As an employee of an institution, where English is the official means of communication, it is important to use grammatically correct English in the preparation of different paper works, considering that the addressee or receiver of these paper works are English proficient. Thus, to avoid embarrassment or untoward comments on the prepared documents or proposals, we must be cautious in our grammar when making documents for our internal as well as external clients. Though English is not the habitual language and medium of expression in our workplace, it is considered very critical especially when higher authorities from different departments i our head office require us to communicate in English. English may be regarded as the universal language. In my opinion, using it as an official language in the workplace should be relative. Although majority of people understand it, not everyone can speak it well. People whose jobs directly require the use of the language are only the ones who should pressure themselves to master the language.
