A Brief History of English

Today’s English is an evolving language. It evolved from Old English (roughly 500 AD – 1100 AD), Middle English (1100 – 1500 AD), Modern English (1500 – 1750 AD), and finally, Contemporary English (1750 AD to present day). I know a lot of people don’t care about this, but I love learning about the history of languages and writing. It’s something I’m always excited to learn about when I read about new developments in the tech world. The language that we speak, and all other written language around the world today, is derived from a single language known as Old English. This is a direct descendant of Latin and has many similar characteristics. We can see this in the words we still use every day.

English has an incredible amount of influence in all aspects of the world and is spoken in every major city around the globe.
